This is the dustiest room in your house – 4 ways to make it sparkling and spotless
Cleaning pros say these tips will help keep your bedroom dust-free
Your bedroom is arguably the most important room in your house. It’s a serene sanctuary for sleep, relaxation, and unwinding after a long day – until you notice all the dusty surfaces.
With all the soft furnishings and stuff in a bedroom, it’s no surprise that it easily becomes the dustiest room in the house, and, despite regular cleaning and attention it can become a real struggle to keep your space spotless.
Luckily, there are simple solutions to tackle dust and keep it at bay, and they’re easy to adopt into your lifestyle, too. So, if dust has been ruining your downtime, these simple tips will bolster how you prevent dust in the bedroom.
4 ways to reduce dust in your bedroom
1. Vacuum regularly
As tiresome as vacuuming is, making time to do it regularly is a surefire way to keep your room dust-free, particularly during summer when hay fever is rife and you need to pollen-proof your bedroom.
If you’ve been wondering if you need a vacuum with a HEPA filter, it might be a worthy investment when it comes to your bedroom.
‘You need to vacuum manually, with a HEPA filter vacuum,’ says Alessandro Gazzo, professional cleaner at Emily’s Maids. ‘I recommend finding a vacuum that you can also turn into a handheld vacuum so that you can use it for your TV stands, closet doors, and nightstands.’
Some of the best handheld vacuums are, luckily, relatively inexpensive, so you don’t need to break the bank to bust dust.
Setting aside time to vacuum at least weekly will also mean the task is over and done quicker, making it less of a chore and easier to maintain.
‘I think setting a timer for 30 minutes each week to vacuum your floors and flat surfaces is enough to keep you on track, reduce cleaning times to a minimum and make sure you’re consistent,’ adds Gazzo.
2. Wash your bedding
We all know there’s nothing better than clean bedding, but knowing how often to wash a comforter will also drastically reduce dust, make your room smell fresh, and ensure a great night’s sleep, as it’s a crucial cleaning step for quality sleep.
‘Change your sheets often,’ says Ross Pascale, director at Neeet House Cleaning. ‘I personally change mine once every two weeks, and wash them in hot water to kill dust mites.'
These pests live in house dust and contribute to common household allergies, so if you’ve been wondering how to get rid of dust mites, cleaning and changing your bedding regularly is key.
3. Declutter your space
It’s a given that less clutter means less surfaces for dust to cling to, and decluttering a bedroom can improve sleep too.
‘Maintaining a minimalist approach is something I really preach when it comes to the bedroom,’ says interior design expert and founder of Print My Rugs Anh Nguyen. ‘The more excess stuff you have, the more excessive dust-collecting surfaces you’ve created. It’s as simple as that. To keep things clean and organized, I advise paring down your belongings to just the true necessities throughout the entire space. By limiting your belongings, you’re limiting the horizontal spaces where dust can accumulate undisturbed.’
Following the bedroom decluttering rules will make the process easier, and you will thank yourself when it comes to dusting your bedroom again.
4. Invest in an air purifier
Do air purifiers actually work? Well, if consistency is the biggest challenge you face when keeping your room dust-free, investing in an air purifier, like the bestselling Levoit Core Mini from Amazon, could be a great option for you.
‘I recommend getting an air purifier, to absorb dust particles in the air and keep everything decently clean and tidy,’ says Gazzo.
There are plenty of sleek and stylish designs on the market, and they don’t have to cost the earth either. Just be sure that you’re clued up on the best place to put an air purifier, to ensure maximum efficacy.

What is the best material to dust a bedroom with?
Unlike traditional dry rags and feather dusters, which mainly just spread dust around, microfiber cloths attract and hold dust with an electrostatic charge. This makes them one of the best tools for cleaning dust in bedrooms, and they’re inexpensive too. You can typically grab a pack of 12 Mr. Siga bestselling microfiber cloths on Walmart for around $12-14.
The key to reducing dust and ensuring your bedroom smells fresh is keeping on top of your tasks. ‘Regular maintenance is key if you want a dust-free bedroom,’ says Gazzo.
