9 things you need to organize in March 2025 – to boost your spring cleaning efforts

Spring cleaning will be pointless if your home is in disarray

Spring cleaning is incredibly satisfying – blowing away the cobwebs and opening the windows to welcome the first warm days. But all that effort scrubbing and polishing is pointless if your home is still disorganized.

That’s why professional organizers recommend tackling nine vital areas this March to set your home up for a stress-free spring.

Here, they’ve shared their top home organizing ideas for the month, helping you clear away the remnants of winter with ease.

Things to organize in March 2025

Organizing in March is one of the best ways to prepare for spring cleaning and tackle the things to clean in March.

Dealing with clutter and streamlining your home before you start can help you save time and energy, ensuring you don't miss any areas buried under piles of clutter.

1. Your closet

While we often recommend organizing a closet every month to ensure you are still wearing everything in there, March is a pivotal moment for many of our wardrobes. As the weather gets brighter and a little warmer, we can start to switch out some seasonal pieces, says Star Hansen, professional organizer and clutter whisperer.

She continues, 'You’ll already be pulling out the short sleeves and lightening your layers, so it’s an ideal time to pull all those summery items to the front of your rack. You don't want to hunt through all your sweaters to find what you need.

‘Plus, having easy access to the right basics can give you the courage to let go of those stained sweatshirts and uncomfortable jeans you never really liked in the first place.’

Any winter items you decide to keep hold of can then be stashed away ready to be taken out again in September.

2. The entryway

A long-term change in weather signifies the perfect time to organize an entryway.

Angelic Ferguson, founder and lead designer at Utopia Home Staging recommends, 'As we transition into milder weather, swap out heavy coats, scarves, and winter boots for lighter jackets, umbrellas, and seasonal footwear. Keeping the entryway tidy and organized helps set a welcoming tone for your home while ensuring daily routines remain seamless.'

3. Spring cleaning supplies

The first step on any spring cleaning checklist should be to prepare for spring cleaning by organizing your cleaning supplies.

As you start to think about your annual deep clean in March, Angelic Ferguson suggests, 'It’s helpful to take inventory of essential cleaning tools and supplies, such as sponges and microfiber cloths. Restock any essentials and discard outdated or ineffective products.

'Consider switching to eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaners, as studies have shown that you do not need harsh chemicals to clean. For example, consider cleaning with vinegar to kill bacteria and remove harsh odors around the home and in laundry.'

We like Great Value Distilled White Vinegar, from Walmart, which comes in extra-large containers to cover all the essential cleaning tasks without needing to go back to the store.

4. The kitchen

Decanting dried food goods into matching jars instantly cuts back on visual clutter in a kitchen.

The change in weather usually also marks a change in our cooking habits. Sunshine, even when it is still cool outside, usually inspires us to move away from soups and stews and start with lighter meals and fresh baking. This is why Danielle Dorn, VP of Design and Creative at mDesign reshuffles and organizes a kitchen every March.

She says, 'When spring rolls around, we love going to the farmer’s market and bringing home what’s in season. Before going, I like to refresh my refrigerator. I start by taking everything out and cleaning all the shelves and drawers. I take a good look at my space and think about how I generally put my items away and what gets lost – it is so helpful to have organized items, such as bins and drawers, in your fridge. Giving everything a home makes unpacking your groceries faster.

‘Monthly, I tackle one cabinet at a time, so at the beginning of March I'll find one that I want to focus on. Once I complete each cabinet daily, or even weekly maintenance, it's so much easier. I’m able to pull out the bins and canisters to wipe down the inside of the cabinet in less time. While I’m cleaning, it’s easy to see which ingredients are low or if I am almost out of snacks for the kids, which provides an unexpected upside to my cleaning routine – it keeps me organized in other areas of my life.’

5. Bedding and linens

The temperature is creeping up in many areas already this March, so consider organizing your linen closet and bedding and swapping over to your lighter sheets.

Molly Freshwater, co-founder of Secret Linen Store says, 'Consider switching to the best cooling comforter, or a duvet with a lower tog rating, perfect for warmer conditions without compromising comfort.
‘When it comes to bed linen, breathability is crucial for regulating body temperature during sleep. Natural fibers, especially linen and cotton, are great for moisture management, heat regulation, preventing clamminess, and keeping your temperature regulated all through the night.'

6. The home office

Professional organizer Star Hansen suggests organizing a home office is a prime contender for the top spot on your to-do list in tax season.

She says, 'The office is a powerful (and necessary) space to work on because we are deep in tax season, and most people are already digging through a year’s worth of paperwork, receipts, and emails to file away and help get rid of paper clutter. You also have a natural deadline built into the mix (so important for our home projects). The best part is that you’ll feel much better and more prepared for the year ahead.’

Organizing your tax documents into a file folder, such as this A4 file organizer, from Walmart, which tucks neatly into a drawer to mitigate clutter.

7. Outdoor gear

Better weather means taking our outdoor hobbies out of hibernation, so organizing tools and gear ready to grab and go on a sunny weekend is essential.

Dawn Falcone, professional declutterer and owner of The Chaos Liberator says, 'Your family's sporting goods and outdoor active gear are key contenders. Ensure items are in working order, pieces are not missing or broken.'

‘This may cover a large inventory – and could involve organizing a garage with too much stuff – based on the family or person, but don't get discouraged. Getting this category organized in March will give you more time on the weekends for adventures.'

8. Your attic

Many of us use our attics to hide away clutter, as a result, they become unruly very quickly.

Andrea Brame, home organizer and Founder of Nolensville Home Organizing suggests that the mild March weather provides the ideal conditions for getting up there and organizing an attic before it becomes too stuffy in a few months.

She adds, 'Consider adding waterproof totes here. It is easier to carry pieces up attic stairs if needed.’

9. Gardening equipment

If you are itching to get back out and into the garden, March provides the perfect excuse. While many of your Spring bulbs will be well on the way to flowering (if they haven't already) there is still plenty to be done, including lawn care. To make it easier, start by organizing your gardening tools and appliances now, ready for some busy weeks ahead, recommends Reba Bassett, professional organizer and owner of Revelation Organizing.

She adds, ‘Take stock of what you have, if anything needs repairing, and make a list of what you need, so next time you visit the garden store you don't have to make multiple trips.’
