Durable and wrinkle-resistant, it's no surprise polyester is such a popular fabric, use in nearly 70% of clothing. But how exactly can you clean it without affecting its appearance or shortening its lifespan?

In this guide, our laundry and cleaning pros reveal the seven simple steps to safely wash polyester to ensure longevity and answer common questions about caring for this versatile material.

How to do laundry well begins with understanding your fabrics. Whether polyester shirts, pants or bed sheets, this guide details exactly how to wash this versatile material.

Step 1: Check the label

Before washing any polyester item, always read the care label.

Karina Toner, operations manager at Spekless Cleaning, says, 'Polyester blends may have different washing requirements, so treat them accordingly. Always check the care label for any specific washing instructions, especially if the polyester is blended with other materials.'

Some polyester blends may require special care, such as dry cleaning or hand washing. The care label will provide instructions regarding water temperature, machine settings, and whether tumble drying is safe.

Step 2: Sort your laundry

Polyester should be washed with similar fabrics and colors to prevent dye transfer and abrasion.

Lina DaSilva, owner of Toronto Shine Cleaning, says, 'Sort your polyester items by color to prevent any color bleeding. Also, always turn garments inside out before washing to reduce friction, snags and protect the fabric.

Avoid washing polyester with heavily soiled or rough-textured items like towels or denim, as these can cause pilling or damage to the fabric.

Step 3: Pre-treat stains

If there are any stains on your polyester clothing, pre-treat them before washing.

Apply a stain remover or a small amount of liquid detergent directly to the stain and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before washing.

OxiClean MaxForce Laundry Stain Remover Spray from Target is suitable for multiple stains, including food, wine, blood and make-up — plus it comes with more than 2,000 five-star reviews.

Step 4: Choose the right detergent

Use a mild detergent that’s safe for synthetic fabrics. Harsh detergents or those with strong fragrances can wear down polyester fibers over time.

DaSilva says, 'Use a mild detergent designed for synthetic fabrics, such as Tide Free & Gentle Liquid Laundry Detergent, available from Target, which is free of dyes and perfumes, making it good on polyester and suitable for those with sensitive skin.'

Toner says, 'I'd also recommend all Liquid Laundry Detergent from Amazon — a mild detergent that's gentle on polyester and helps prevent the buildup that can lead to dullness.

'For stubborn odors, add a cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle as well.'

Heinz All Natural Distilled White Vinegar from Walmart is potent and effective.

Step 5: Select the correct machine setting

Polyester is best washed cold or warm cycle with a gentle setting to minimize agitation and prevent damage.

Cleaning pro Karina Toner says, 'Set your washing machine to a warm water cycle with a gentle or permanent press setting to minimize wrinkles. Avoid washing in hot water, as it can cause the fabric to break down over time, losing its elasticity.'

DaSilva advises using mesh laundry bags, which help prevent tangling and snagging. She says, 'SimpleHouseware’s Laundry Mesh Wash Bag Set, available from Walmart, is a good choice for delicate clothes, offering three different sizes.

'Wool dryer balls are another great option as they reduce static cling without using fabric softener, which can harm polyester. Smart Sheep’s Wool Dryer Balls from Amazon effectively reduce static and help keep your polyester items soft.'

For alternative clothing bags, Hayden Hill Luxury Organic Cotton Garment Bags are Amazon's Choice meaning they are bought often, rarely returned, usually available and highly-rated by shoppers.

Step 6: Dry carefully

Polyester dries quickly, so it’s best to air-dry it on a clothesline or drying rack.

If you prefer using a dryer, set it to a low heat or tumble dry on a cool setting. High heat can cause the fabric to shrink, melt, or lose its shape.

Step 7: Ironing and final touches

Polyester is naturally wrinkle-resistant, but if needed, you can iron it on a low setting.

Toner recommends Downy Wrinkle Releaser Spray from Amazon, adding, 'This product helps to reduce wrinkles and static in polyester garments, making it easier to maintain the fabric's appearance without ironing.'

To protect the fabric, place a thin cloth between the polyester garment and the iron. Avoid high temperatures as they can scorch the fabric.

FAQs

Can polyester shrink in the wash?

Polyester is generally resistant to shrinking, but high heat from hot water cycles or a dryer can cause minimal shrinkage.

Is it safe to use fabric softener on polyester?

It’s best to avoid fabric softeners as they can create a residue that diminishes the fabric’s moisture-wicking properties. Instead, try using a mild detergent.

Can I wash polyester in hot water?

Washing polyester in hot water is not recommended, as it can damage the fibers. Cold or warm water is best to retain the fabric’s integrity.

So there you have it — how to wash polyester in seven simple steps. By using the right water temperature, gentle settings, and proper drying techniques, you can ensure your polyester garments remain in great condition for years to come.
