I love hosting at this time of year. Hosting in the fall, for me is far more stressful and takes far more organizing. But for the summer, I have a bit of an open-door policy at weekends – friends and family come over to sit in the yard, and enjoy whatever food and drink I can cobble together, expectations are low but the vibes are high.

So I treat my yard with as much care and attention as my kitchen or living room. as it really does become the heart of the home during summer. That means I am always looking out for those key pieces that are going to make the space even more inviting. And right now, top of my list is a patio umbrella. Specifically, a whimsical, slightly retro umbrella.

These seem to have gone viral on social media as a quick way to give any patio a resort-like feel. And I was so surprised when I started shopping at how affordable these pieces can be, made even more affordable in the Memorial Day sales that are happening right now. I am going to share my top finds, some of which are under $100 and have super quick delivery.

I am the Head of Interiors at Homes & Gardens. I started off in the world of journalism in fashion and luxury travel and then landed my first interiors role at Real Homes and have been in the world of interior design ever since. Prior to my role at H&G I was the digital editor at Livingetc, from which I took a sabbatical to travel in my self-converted van (not as glamorous as decorating a home, but very satisfying). A year later, and with lots of technical DIY lessons learned I am back to writing and editing, sometimes even from the comfort of my home on wheels.
