The new IKEA HÖSTKVÄLL collection is all about the tricky transition from fall to winter
Spruce up your space for fall and winter with the new IKEA HÖSTKVÄLL capsule collection
It’s that strange time of the year: we aren’t quite ready for holiday decor, but are definitely in a more festive mood. It can feel jarring to jump from the warm hues of autumnal decor into the cool whites and jolly reds of holiday decor.
But if you’re feeling stuck in home decor limbo, I think IKEA has you covered with its new HÖSTKVÄLL Collection. Designed and curated specifically for the transitional season, the new IKEA capsule collection can take you from fall to winter with just a few budget-friendly accent pieces.
This new collection is the perfect home decor line for that in-between season when autumn is on its way out but winter (and holiday decor season) hasn’t quite set in. From throw blankets and pillows to kitchen towels and wreaths, the collection features some gorgeous transitional home decor pieces that will keep your space feeling fresh and in season in the run-up to Thanksgiving and beyond. While I'm not a fan of all of it, I've selected my favorites that I think will bridge that awkward gap.

Transition your home from fall to winter with the HÖSTKVÄLL Artificial Wreath. This gorgeous 17-inch indoor/outdoor IKEA wreath features faux foliage inspired by sprigs of dried reeds. Whether you prefer its minimalistic look or want to dress it up with seasonal details (such as miniature pine cones or a large red velvet bow), the wreath provides a blend of autumn and winter to your front door.
Quilted textures are one of this year’s most popular fashion and home decor trends. To add a touch of the trend to your space without overdoing it, consider the HÖSTKVÄLL Cushion Cover in Orange. This 20x20-inch pillowcase is designed in collaboration with Johanna Jelinek and constructed from a lightweight yet oh-so-cozy 100 percent linen material with modern chevron-inspired quilting.
Mix things up with some seasonal prints. The HÖSTKVÄLL Leaf Pattern Cushion Cover features a black and orange autumn leaf print and is designed in collaboration with Jóna Berglind Stefánsdóttir. The 100 percent cotton pillow cover measures 20x20 inches and looks gorgeous layered with other fall fabrics, including velvet and linen.
If you lean more toward winter style and want a wreath that works for fall but can easily transition for the holiday season, the HÖSTKVÄLL Artificial Fern Wreath is worth it. This 17-inch indoor/outdoor IKEA wreath features faux foliage in a lush, bright green hue that looks beautiful on its own but also works as an excellent base for DIY holiday wreaths – just add a little ribbon.
Get cozy with the HÖSTKVÄLL Throw. This IKEA blanket is made in collaboration with Johanna Jelinek and constructed from a 100 percent cotton material that gives it a lightweight and breathable feel while still providing a nice, cozy layer.
Add some seasonal accent pieces to your space with the help of these adorable dish towels from the IKEA HÖSTKVÄL collection. Featuring the collection’s signature leaf print, this set of two dish towels adds a nice autumnal feel to your space without things feeling too themed. Designed in collaboration with Jóna Berglind Stefánsdóttir, the 100 percent cotton dish towels are as stylish as they are functional.
FAQ
Is it too late to order Thanksgiving decor?
There's the best part of fortnight to get your orders in, but be sure to check delivery dates or pay for next-day delivery, as some products may take longer to deliver, by which time it will be too late.
When should I decorate for Christmas?
There's no right answer and it depends on your schedule. Traditionally, it was the first day of Advent, which this year falls on December 3rd. Some people just use December 1st as a guide, since that's when kids - and perhaps some adults - will start counting down to the big day on their advent calendars. Alternatively, you can just use the Thanksgiving weekend as your guide.
With Thanksgiving right round the corner, there's still time to sort out your fall decor. We've covered all the best Thanksgiving collections from West Elm, Pottery Barn, and CB2. More importantly, we've gone into detail on the best ways to style your Thanksgiving decor, from ideas on how to style a Thanksgiving mantel and outdoor Thanksgiving decor.
Of course, while I think these transitional pieces are great, you can always jump straight from one season to another. That's why we've already been preparing for winter and Christmas, covering how to get organized for Christmas and what to declutter for Christmas.
