Two summers ago, I was assigned to test the Avocado Green Mattress. Given the choice of Firm, Medium, or Plush, I opted for the Medium. Later, I wished I'd gone for the Plush, with its squishy and supportive box-top to take the pressure off my joints. So, when the opportunity arose to test the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper, I jumped at the chance. It's made a real difference to my sleep experience. The mattress still feels firm, but now it has a cushioning layer to support my body's natural curves.
The Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper recently relaunched, and it's now available in two heights and two firmness levels to suit every sort of sleeper. The two-inch topper should improve your comfort without majorly changing the look of your mattress, while the three-inch topper forms a softer surface for side sleepers. In terms of firmness, the Medium is filled with supportive Dunlop latex, while the Plush is filled with Talalay latex, which is springy and responsive.
As a member of the H&G mattress testing team, I'm part of the search to find the world's best mattress topper. Together, we've tested plush pillow-tops alongside denser, firmer foam models. For the sake of a fair fight, we assess each topper against the same criteria: pressure relief; thermoregulation; motion isolation; and edge support. The Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper gets top scores across the board. If only it came with corner straps, I'd bump it up to pole position in our buying guide. As it stands, there's nothing to keep the topper from sliding across your mattress. I've had to get out of bed in the middle of the night once or twice to reposition it.

Who would suit the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper?
- All sleep styles: the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper comes in two firmnesses to suit different sleep positions. The Plush topper is filled with Talalay latex, which is springy and responsive for side sleepers. The Medium topper is filled with Dunlop latex, which is solid and supportive for back and stomach sleepers. I tried the Plush, and it's been totally transformative.
- Eco-conscious shoppers: the Dunlop latex is GOLS-certified and the Talalay latex is FSC-certified. Each type of topper comes wrapped in GOTS-certified organic cotton. There's no wool, which means the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper is vegan.
- Hot sleepers: after testing the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper through the summer, I can confirm that it works to stop night sweats and combat hot flashes. The latex is naturally breathable and cotton makes a great moisture-wicker.
What's it like to sleep on the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper?
- Pressure relief: as a side sleeper, I knew I wanted to test the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper in Plush to cushion my joints while keeping my spine in line. As I laid down on the topper, I could feel the latex conform around my curves to bear my weight. With just enough sink as to feel supportive, Talalay latex feels a lot like memory foam, only without the heat retention. If you sleep on your back or stomach, then I suggest you opt for the Medium topper. If you suffer from backache, and you know you need a firmer surface, then I recommend the Nolah Mattress Topper.
- Thermoregulation: whether you opt for the Plush or the Medium mattress topper, you'll find it filled with organic latex for breathability and wrapped in organic cotton, which makes an excellent moisture-wicker. After testing the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper through the summer, I'd put it up there with the best cooling mattress toppers. This thing got me through a hot and humid New York summer. I never woke up with night sweats and I managed to sleep comfortably even when my HVAC system went haywire.
- Motion isolation: like any latex mattress, this topper has a bit of bounce. This makes it much easier to get into and out of bed, but it also means that you're more likely to feel it if your partner moves around in the middle of the night. Personally, I found that the thicker layer of Talalay latex in the three-inch topper managed to absorb a great deal of motion. Even as my boyfriend tossed and turned, my sleep remained largely undisturbed. Still, if you're looking for a topper with optimal motion isolation, I'd recommend the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt Topper, instead.
- Edge support: I like to sit on the side of the bed to get dressed in the mornings, so I know I need a mattress topper with decent edge support, or I won't be able to get a grip on the ground. I found that I could sit comfortably on the side of the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper, though it dipped a little beneath my body weight. For a plush topper with excellent edge support, I recommend the Helix Plush Mattress Topper.
- Delivery: the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper arrives compressed in a cardboard box. A Queen-sized Plush topper weighs around 40 lbs, which is pretty dense, but nothing I couldn't handle on my own.
How does the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper rate online?
The Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper boasts a 4.6 average star rating from 3,142 verified reviews. Avocado pulls out popular topics from comments so that you can search for reviews that focus on 'comfort', 'support' 'smell', and so on. One particular review really struck me − I could have written it myself. 'I bought this for my Avocado Green Mattress,' the reviewer writes. 'I sleep on my side, so I need a lot of pressure relief. I've been so sore and cramping on my Avocado mattress, but this topper really took the weight off. Within two or three days, my pain was gone. It fits perfectly on my mattress and it is so beautifully made.'
A few customers share my concern that, in the absence of corner straps, the topper is prone to sliding off the mattress. Before you buy an Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper, I suggest you learn how to keep a mattress topper from sliding. It might be as easy as slipping a grip pad beneath the topper or repurposing a set of sheet fasteners.
Should I buy the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper?
The Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper proves that you don't have to sacrifice your comfort for your conscience. Since I started testing this topper, my night sweats have abated and I don't wake up with aches and pains. If it came with corner straps, I'd give it the full five stars. As it stands, the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper offers near-perfect performance at a very reasonable price.

How we test mattress toppers
The Homes & Gardens mattress testing team is made up of seasoned product testers across America. Together, we represent a wide range of ages, sleep styles, and body types, so you should be able to find a tester who sleeps like you.
Before we publish our initial review, we test each topper for at least 30 days from the comfort of our own homes to give you the most accurate indication of long-term performance. We're testing for pressure relief, thermoregulation, motion isolation, and edge support. To assess pressure relief, we flip between our backs, stomachs, and sides to see how the topper feels in each position. To assess thermoregulation, we sleep through hot summers and heatwaves, making note of whether we wake up in the night in a sweat.
To assess motion isolation, we fill a glass with water and set it in the center of the topper. Then, we take a dumbbell and place it on the topper. We move the weight ever closer to the cup of water, watching to see if the cup starts to shake or the water starts to spill. The less the cup moves, the better the motion isolation, and the more suitable the mattress topper for couples and light sleepers. To assess edge support, we sit on the side of the topper and measure how far we fall. The further we fall, the worse the edge support, and the less suitable the mattress for anyone who likes to sit or sleep on the side of the bed.
Where possible, we compare our findings against verified customer reviews to pick out common concerns. We also consider all the practical parts of buying a mattress topper, from the details of delivery to the length of the sleep trial and the extent of the warranty. Finally, we bring it all back to the price of the topper to help you determine value for money. To learn more about how we test mattress toppers, consult our expert guide.
