This year has seen the color gray's popularity fall into question. Some designers argue that gray as we know it is no longer in vogue – urging us to look for earthier or more vibrant alternatives. In fact, our feature on which color is replacing gray was one of our most-read ever, so many of you obviously agree, too.

However, Patrick and Brittany Mahomes have just made a case for gray in their backyard of all places – and it works. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback shared a glimpse of his outdoor furniture, specifically, which is a distinct gray-blue color, much deeper and warmer than the traditionally-popular, cooler gray that designers have begun to shun.

Our opinion? Gray-blue Mahomes-style is the way to go. And it's a shade that makes for a fantastic backdrop for planting, making the green of plants look incredibly vibrant, if you take it outdoors like they have.

Patrick and Brittany have used this gray-blue tone on both their backyard armchairs and rug – creating an outdoor living room area on their paved terrace. It's a tone that looks especially fitting against the couple's light paving – a look that has not gone unnoticed by furniture expert Raf Michalowski.

Raf Michalowski

Raf Michalowski is the president of Meble Furniture, a leading e-commerce retailer of contemporary furniture that has operated in New York for over 15 years. His role allows him to observe changing trends and track which furnishings are in demand nationwide.

'Gray-blue is trending right now – and for a good reason. It's versatile, calming, and contemporary – perfect for creating a peaceful outdoor space. The color is becoming popular because it pairs well with cool tones, such as white and warmer hues, like blush pinks or oranges,' Raf says. 'Its neutral palette isn't overwhelming and won’t draw too much attention away from other design elements.'

And, while we are focused on the sportsman's furniture, Raf says that the color would look just as trendy in his Kansas City home

'The popularity of gray-blue as a paint color is certainly growing, and it's easy to see why – its versatility makes it a great choice for both modern and traditional home decor styles. With its calming undertones, it can create a peaceful atmosphere in any room.'
