Kitchen appliances

I'm the kitchen appliances editor for Homes & Gardens, testing everything from air fryers and mixers to juicers and coffee machines. I trained in Culinary Arts at Leiths School of Food & Wine and previously served as the Recipe Editor for Mindful Chef, so when it comes to cooking and appliances, I certainly know my way around a kitchen.

If you're looking to upgrade your kitchen appliances, you’ll score a great deal on Black Friday. I’m already starting to see super savings on air fryers, the best blenders and juicers – just in time for that new year health kick.

Plus, at this time of year, large appliance brands typically release newer models, so you’ll be able to buy older models at low prices. I’ve consulted the experts on the most reliable refrigerator brands, from Frigidaire to LG, so I can find the highest quality bargains for you.

I’ve rounded up our favorite, tried-and-tested kit on our Black Friday appliances deals page – so you can act fast when the sales hit and be certain that you’re investing in the best.

Sleep

I'm the resident sleep writer at Homes & Gardens. I spend my days tracking the prices on the best mattresses and bedding and spend my nights testing them out from the comfort of my own home: that's hundreds of hours of testing through all four seasons. I've traveled the world to see how your favorite sleep products get made, from the Hästens headquarters in Sweden to the 3Z mattress manufacturing plant in Arizona.

The big day isn’t for another few weeks, but some of the best Black Friday mattress deals are already dropping. So far, I’ve seen deep discounts on the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress, our best mattress for back pain: a Queen starts from $599.

I’m working closely with some of the best places to buy a mattress to secure exclusive discount codes for H&G readers, saving you more time and money this Black Friday. Shop with the code H&G27 at Birch and Helix to save 27% (rather than 20%) or head over to Bear and save 35% (instead of 30%) with our code H&G35.

Last year, I investigated if mattress sales are real and found that some sites are facing lawsuits for false advertising. When you’re shopping for mattress sales, it pays to keep your wits about you. I recommend you settle on a make and model of mattress, then compare and conquer, cross-checking the price across a range of retailers.

As for bedding, I’m hearing a lot of buzz over at Cozy Earth, who are launching their biggest sale ever this Black Friday. We should see daily flash sales and sitewide discounts, promising up to 45% off their sheets, blankets, and bedding bundles. Cozy Earth makes some of my favorite bedding, from their sumptuous Silk Pillow to their breathable Bamboo Comforter. I often hesitate to recommend their pieces, because they’re so expensive, but I feel much more confident with these discounts.'

I'm the home tech editor for Homes & Gardens, focusing almost exclusively on the vast world of vacuum cleaners. I have been reviewing products for years now and have spent many dozens of hours testing vacuum cleaners both in our dedicated center, and my home.

Let's face it: no one really wants to spend their hard-earned cash on a vacuum cleaner, and the good ones can cost hundreds of dollars, at least. That's why it's smart to wait until Black Friday when you'll be able to grab a premium model at a fraction of the price.

I cover sale events every year, and every Black Friday I see huge discounts from brands like Dyson, Shark, Bissell and Samsung. It's so certain that I would never recommend paying full price for a vacuum. Retailers are known for launching their site-wide sales, but a handy tip is to always visit the manufacturers themselves. Often, this is where you'll find the biggest reductions.

Last year, I saw discounts across some of the best vacuums we've ever tested, like the Dyson V15 Detect and the Shark Stratos, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're even cheaper this year.

Currently in the Dyson sale, the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute (our best vacuum for pet hair) has been reduced from $749.99 to $569.99. The Dyson V11 Extra and the Dyson Digital Slim are also discounted.

As Head of eCommerce for Homes & Gardens, I oversee all our reviews content to make sure our readers find the right information to help them make the best purchase. After graduating from Cambridge University, I got a start in reviewing at the iconic Good Housekeeping Institute, testing a wide range of household products and appliances. I then moved to BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine, assessing gardening tools, machinery, and wildlife products, so I have plenty of experience of reviewing products across the entire home and garden, with several years experience reviewing grills, too.

I've tested many of the best grills and best pizza ovens, and as much as I love them, they're not always the cheapest.

It may feel a little strange buying outdoor appliances and gadgets in winter, but this time of year (and especially in the Black Friday sales) is actually the best time to do it, as it's when many big brands and retailers significantly drop their prices on all things outdoor.

So if you're looking to refresh your yard for next summer and elevate your hosting game, now might just be the best time to invest in a new grill or pizza oven. I'll be keeping my eye on Ooni deals, Gozney deals and more, to make sure you're getting the best discounts available on all things outdoor cooking.

Furniture and decor

I'm the style and trends editor on the interior design team at Homes & Gardens where I fuse my 5 years of experience working in the fashion industry with my passion for interior design, documenting the trials and tribulations of my personal home renovation journey along the way! It is my job to report on the latest trends in home decor and sniff out the most coveted shopping pieces to bring you style-focused edits and inspirational home content.

Shopping for your home can get rather expensive, particularly if you're trying to furnish multiple spaces or are remodeling an entire home (like I am currently). So my best advice is to make the most of major sale days and, lucky for us, there are a quite few on the horizon this side of the New Year including the infamous Black Friday sales. Some of our most coveted retailers will be holding must-see sales so its time to sharpen those elbows and swot up on everything you need to know about the best deals.

As H&G’s style and trends editor, it’s my job to spend the best part of November scrolling, scouring, and bookmarking the best Black Friday home decor and furniture deals so you can be sure I’ve done all the homework ahead of the big day. In fact, I’ve done the hard work for you, so you can simply sit back and shop – take a look at some of my current favorite designs below.

You can even get ahead of the game with some early Black Friday deals. McGee & Co. currently have selected items in their Style The Season event, while some savvy shoppers might have spotted a Black Friday Preview over on Wayfair, and Anthropologie is currently offering up to 30% furniture, bedding, and decor to help you get ready for holiday hosting.

How we find the best deals for your home

Each of our editors has their own specialism. Lydia looks after our kitchen content, reviewing everything from the blenders to researching the best refrigerator brands. Emilia is our resident sleep writer and has tested many mattresses and some of the best mattress toppers. Dan covers vacuums, including the best Dyson alternatives and all the latest offerings from Dyson, Shark, and Bissell. Alex is all over the outdoors and knows where to buy the best gas grill and best indoor pizza ovens. Finally, Charlotte from our interiors team has her eye on all things chic homeware and furniture.

In the lead-up to Black Friday and during the event, our expert team will channel their retailer and product knowledge to hunt for only the very best deals on products that they actually love or have tested.

FAQs

Should you shop Black Friday early?

Black Friday deals can start dropping as early as November 1st (yes, you read that right). So, with that in mind, it's smart to wonder if you should hold out until the big day or shop Black Friday early. It can feel like a real lose-lose. If you buy now, you could miss out on the huge savings on the day itself, but if you wait too long, the gadget you've had your eye on all year could quickly sell out.

Leo Smigel, personal finance expert and founder of Analyzing Alpha says, 'while the conventional wisdom suggests waiting for the main event might secure the best bargains, this isn't necessarily true in today's retail climate. Black Friday, once a frantic day of retail madness, has morphed into a more protracted and accessible event'.

Not only is there little risk with buying early, you can even find some better deals. Last year we recommended a deal on one of the best vacuums for pet hair. The vacuum was a remarkably good deal; the price plummeted from $309.99 to $99, however, the price then jumped back up to $172, so it didn't pay off to wait.

Our advice ultimately boils down to a simple rule of thumb. If the product you're looking for is a necessity and you see a good early discount, we would recommend purchasing, but if the product is more of a 'nice-to-have', hold out until Black Friday and try your luck.

When is the best time to shop home deals?

There's always a home deal somewhere, that's the beauty of having so many sites and so many experts (like us) at your fingertips. While Black Friday tends to see the biggest discounts, it's not the only time to grab a discount. Major retailers are almost always selling off old stock at a discount, and every major federal holiday has its own sales event. The big events, such as Black Friday, holiday sales, Memorial Day, July 4th, Presidents' Day and Prime Day will have some of the best sales, but there's plenty to go around in between.

It's also worth remembering that good discounts will roll around on seasonal items in off-peak times. For example, if you want the latest grill or some chic outdoor furniture, you're best buying them during fall, when all the prices drop post-summer.
