The planning stages of a kitchen remodel are always exciting. From colors and cabinet styles to cozy nooks and luxury features, there are so many designs to consider.

But it's important to set your expectations realistically. In theory, it can seem like the pinnacle of luxury to fill your kitchen ideas with every fancy and elevated feature on offer. But the truth is, too many different elements can not only make your space feel overfilled, but they're also going to push your budget sky high.

So, how can you make sure you create a functional kitchen that still feels luxurious and elevated when planning a kitchen remodel? According to designer Shea McGee, it's all about knowing your priorities. Here's everything you need to know.

It can be easy to get carried away with all the elements you can add to your kitchen design. A glance at inspirational spaces, and suddenly you have a list of all the features you want to include in your own scheme.

'Clients always come to us with really specific asks for their kitchens. Sometimes, it's a coffee bar; sometimes, it's a built-in nook area; sometimes, it's a wine fridge or a butler's pantry or a second kitchen behind the kitchen – we have done it all,' says Shea via Instagram.

'One thing to note is that even our really high-end projects don't get every single one of those things in the kitchen. You have to really know what is the priority for you,' she explains.

So, before you start planning all the things you want to add and change in your kitchen remodel, take a moment to consider what is reasonable and decide on the biggest priorities for your kitchen and the way you use it.

What's within your budget?

As with any project, budget is a huge consideration. While it's always advised to add an extra 10-20% or so to your budget for unexpected changes, sticking to it as much as possible is key to a successful remodel.

So, when you're considering the luxurious elements you want to add, consider how much of your budget they will take up. For example, a pot filler might seem like a useful addition, but the plumbing costs may take you over budget.

What do you have space for?

Unless you are adding an extension during your kitchen remodel, you're going to have to work with the square footage you have available – which means only adding the features that you have room for.

This is especially important to consider if you're thinking about adding a kitchen island, full-size fridge, and a dining nook, for example. Consider which feel the most important or which you think you will use most before finalizing any decisions. Too many new features will result in a kitchen that feels overcrowded and dysfunctional.

Most importantly, your kitchen remodel should be about creating a space that really works for you. Yes, a back kitchen feels like a luxurious addition, but if you're not an avid cook or host, you probably don't need an entire secondary kitchen for food prep and cleaning.

On the other hand, if creating a multi-functional room for the whole family is your priority, a breakfast nook is the perfect way to make space for socializing and dining without compromising on functionality.

This also applies to smaller elements, like a home bar, coffee station, or wine fridge, as Shea mentioned. In these cases, think about the extras that will make the most difference to your lifestyle. Are your morning rituals the most important part of your day, or are you a regular host of cheese and wine nights?

If you remember to keep these three things in mind and follow designers' kitchen renovation rules, there's no reason you can't execute a kitchen remodel that's stylish, luxurious, and functional for the way you use your space. It's all about prioritizing the things that matter most and knowing when to stop. And don't forget the practicalities to consider when renovating a kitchen to ensure your space is as functional as it is aesthetic.
