Kitchen backsplashes have always been a must-have functional feature in your scheme, protecting the walls as you cook. But they are also an important element to create the aesthetic you want, too.
If this year's kitchen trends are anything to go by, we're expecting big things from kitchen backsplash ideas this year. Blending practical and stylish requirements, we're seeing this once-overlooked feature become the focal point of the kitchen.
And who better to ask than the experts? Here, designers share the kitchen backsplash trends dominating 2025 – spoiler alert, there's a lot of tile at the forefront of trending designs this year.
8 kitchen backsplash trends to have on your radar
Whether you love the idea of experimenting with different tile layouts or prefer the sleek, classic look of stone, this year's kitchen backsplash trends feature beautiful materials and plenty of color and texture for a truly unique scheme.
1. Being even bolder with color and pattern
Gone are the days of the all-white kitchen reigning supreme in trends. 2025 is all about bringing in color and pattern for a more characterful design – and your backsplash is the perfect place to do it.
'Kitchens are seeing a return to personality. In 2025, expect to see a return to tiled backsplashes – in a pattern or color-blocking motif,' says interior designer Kristina Khersonsky.
'More and more people are yearning to have spaces that are a reflection of themselves, their lifestyles, and their personalities. In that, we’ll see more color in the kitchens through materials selected.'
2. Metal kitchen backsplashes
When you think of a kitchen backsplash, certain materials come to mind. Tiles and stone are classic options, but an unexpected material is at the forefront of trends this year.
'Metal backsplashes are a great way to mix things up, whether it’s brushed brass, stainless steel, or patinated copper. They add contrast and a hint of industrial luxe, especially when layered with natural materials,' says Fiona Ginnett, co-founder at HØLTE Studio.
In this kitchen, a striking copper backsplash has been paired with the blue cabinetry. It's an unexpected material choice but it adds instant warmth to the scheme. The best part? The copper will look better with wear and age, taking on a beautiful patina.
3. Organic, textured tiles
This year, kitchen backsplash trends are really embracing textural designs. Irregular shapes, interesting glazing techniques, and color variations are all favored ways to create a visually interesting backsplash.
'We’ve seen an influx in tile application and appreciation – tiles with three-dimensional textures, ancient tile techniques, such as zellige, coveted for their imperfections, and various unique glazing forms. The array of tile and tile patterns will be applied to kitchen backsplashes more and more this year,' says Kristina.
This pink kitchen is a perfect example. Square tiles with slight color variations have been applied in a simple linear design, but the irregular texture gives it more dimension and gives the illusion of a more dynamic layout.
4. Backsplashes taken to the ceiling
A kitchen backsplash might be a practical feature, but this year we're seeing designs become more statement and decorative. Think of it as the accent wall of the kitchen, adding something a bit different amongst all of the cabinetry.
'Kitchen backsplashes can be about making a statement, whether that’s through bold materials, tactile finishes, or unexpected details,' says Fiona, who notes that taking the backsplash up the wall to the ceiling is a big trend this year.
'A full-tile wall is a great way to create a cohesive look, especially in open-plan spaces where you want that sense of flow. It can act as a striking backdrop without visual breaks, bringing a real sense of unity to the design.'
5. Colorful grout on backsplashes
Grout is constantly dividing opinions. Some people think the best approach is a contrasting color, whereas others prefer it to seamlessly blend in with the tiles. But this year's trends are seeing colorful alternatives taking center stage.
'For a subtle but impactful twist, colored grout is an easy way to refresh a classic tiled splashback. Earthy tones like a deep green or terracotta can completely transform the look,' says Fiona.
In this retro scheme, orange grout has been used between the square white tiles, making more of a feature of the backsplash and tying in the orange upper cabinets. It's an easy way to take something functional and make it more decorative.
6. Natural stone designs
If a tiled kitchen backsplash isn't really your style, you'll be glad to know that one of this year's biggest trends is a simpler, sleeker design.
'Natural stone in the kitchen is undeniably stunning, though its durability can be a concern for some. By using it on the backsplash while opting for more durable finishes on the kitchen countertops, you can achieve a striking balance of beauty and practicality,' says Andrew Hays, founder of Cabbonet.
'This allows you to build your design palette around the stone's tones, crafting a cohesive and visually captivating space that remains inherently unique. Natural stone is one-of-a-kind, and visiting a slab yard is an inspiring thing to do and offers the chance to find a piece that truly speaks to you.'
7. Tile mural kitchen backsplashes
We've been seeing several dated kitchen trends making a comeback, from designs of the '70s and '80s to the revival of butcher's blocks and kitchen tables. And this year's kitchen backsplash trends are seeing another old favorite reimagined.
Tile mural kitchen backsplashes are big news, but not in the same way they were in the past. Instead of the small, outdated designs, bold, colorful, and unexpected styles are proving a popular choice.
From floral and botanical murals behind a cooktop to immersive tile designs covering every wall in your kitchen, it's the best way to create a more personalized, characterful design.
8. Continuing your countertop material onto the backsplash
Bolder, braver designs are big news in this year's kitchen backsplash trends. While tiles are having a moment, a statement design can be achieved with almost any material.
'2025 is a great year for really pushing the boat out with exciting kitchen designs. Continuing the same countertop material for the backsplash is very popular. This can extend to a floating shelf in the same or contrasting material which delineates the extent of the backsplash,' says Jayne Everett, creative designer at Naked Kitchens.
This seamless design instantly elevates the look of a kitchen and adds a stylish focal point when an intricate material is introduced. A strongly veined marble is a classic choice, and very on-trend for 2025.
From tile and stone to metallic kitchen features, this year's kitchen backsplash trends are decidedly textural, promoting that sense of unique appeal. While tiled kitchen backsplashes seem to be the most prominent of trends this year, there are plenty of unique ways to do them that feel new and fresh.
