This once-dated kitchen has been transformed into a warm, timeless space – and it's a lesson in pairing the right finishes and materials
The designer banished the old '80s features for elevated designs – and it pays homage to the home's Spanish architecture

The way we design kitchens has changed dramatically over the past few years. The colors, cabinet styles, and finishes have all become more considered and homey. So, if your kitchen hasn't been updated in a while, it's probably started to feel quite dated.
An up-to-date yet timeless update was exactly what this kitchen needed. The clients wanted to bring the design into the 21st century while maintaining the same layout, which meant identifying the features making the kitchen look dated and replacing them with stylish alternatives that will stand the test of time.
The newly remodeled space nails the brief, transforming a dated, dingy space into a transitional design that feels warm, cozy, and inviting. Here's how the designer created the reimagined kitchen design.
'The initial kitchen was very traditional and dated. The cabinetry was unnecessarily ornate, and the countertops were loud and fabricated with a dated edge profile. However, the layout and flow were workable, and the house itself had great bones,' says interior designer Sarah West.
You would assume that keeping the same kitchen layout would make the remodel a much easier process, but it created an unexpected challenge. The brief was to create a kitchen that was 'more open, inviting, and functional' while sticking to the same footprint, which required some creative solutions.
'To achieve this, I designed custom cabinetry that maximized storage and enhanced flow without altering the layout. The clients were pretty decisive and hands-off, so I made sure to be on the lookout for any possible pitfalls or deviations from the plan to keep the room coherent,' Sarah explains.
Despite retaining the layout, the space required some major changes to achieve the style and atmosphere the clients desired. 'This project involved a dramatic style transformation, updating the kitchen from its original 1980s design to a contemporary, sophisticated space,' she adds.
Despite the initial challenges, the remodeled space proves that every obstacle was worth it. The kitchen has been transformed from cold and dated to a warm and inviting space that exudes timeless elegance, mixing modern and traditional elements beautifully.
'I drew inspiration from a variety of design influences while thoughtfully integrating the Spanish architectural style of the home. The clients had a laid-back style, so I embraced that as a design ethos. I kept things timeless and worked closely with the trades to achieve the details to make the room interesting,' explains Sarah.
Nods to the home's Spanish architecture are evident throughout the space, most noticeably in the statement range hood. 'I worked closely with the trades when constructing the range hood to make sure that the shape was just right, serving as both a focal point and a seamless extension of the home’s Spanish style.'
One thing that truly stands out throughout this kitchen is the cabinetry. It offers the perfect middle ground between contemporary and classic styles, proving how effective micro shaker kitchen cabinets can be in a transitional space.
'The cabinets were completely custom, and this is where the kitchen shines. I really thought about optimizing the room for the client’s use and placed cabinets accordingly,' says Sarah.
'From a design perspective, I blended the European face frame with alternating door styles, including slab front and shaker front. I love the depth this adds to the design and how it contributes to the bespoke nature of the project.'
The warm tones of the cabinetry and flooring have been lifted by the light kitchen countertops, which tie into the beautiful range hood and instantly give the space a lighter, brighter finish.
The finer details are crucial to create the warm, lived-in look of the space. A tiled backsplash, which has been extended along three walls of the kitchen, brings in new texture to the space, adding interest to the large expanse of wall space.
The decorative elements elevate the kitchen and give it that lived-in, personalized finish. Vases filled with seasonal blooms on the countertops bring a natural element into the space, while open shelves decorated with elevated kitchenware and collected decor add a sense of character.
The entire scheme is warm, inviting, and utterly timeless. It's a stark contrast from its former design, but it proves that the same layout can be totally transformed with thoughtful updates, timeless pairings, and a warmer palette.
We are often so quick to rework the layout when a kitchen feels dated, but this space proves how impactful the materials and finishes can be in a space. The right wood tones and simplistic countertop design have made this space feel timeless and homey – it's the perfect balance of aesthetic and functional.
