What makes a small kitchen look cheap? 5 styling mistakes designers warn to avoid
Small kitchens can be challenging to keep looking luxe, but we have sourced some simple tips to transform it from cheap to chic
Small kitchens require some strategic styling. Their compact nature means that ample counter space and cabinetry can often be limited – and as such, clutter can quickly accumulate.
Not only does this contribute to the space looking untidy, but it can also look cheap (even if appliances and utensils are not).
Looking for small kitchen ideas to make your space look more luxe? We rounded up the top do's and don'ts for petite spaces, so you know what styling methods to steer clear of, and what to incorporate.
Things that make small kitchens look cheap
1. Cluttered counters
The number one culprit of a cheap-looking kitchen is a cluttered counter space. With limited surface space, it can feel challenging to consistently keep them clear of appliances, dishware, and cooking ingredients. However, experts recommend utilizing wall (and even ceiling) space to keep these areas looking tidier.
'Keeping countertops clear and investing in smart kitchen storage solutions instantly elevates the look,' Westchester-based designer Nina Lichtenstein states. 'Built-in shelves, pull-out cabinets, or magnetic knife racks help maintain a clean, organized appearance.'
We are also partial to hanging pots and pans, both for its practicality and its ability to add visual interest to a kitchen.
Stainless Steel
For a sleek professional-grade-looking kitchen, opt for a plain stainless steel knife rack that is easy to clean, durable, rust-proof, and looks slick.
Brass Rack
This brass utensil rail brings a vintage-inspired aesthetic and a warm touch to any kitchen. It's a great way to display a set of copper pans or everyday items such as strainers. It also makes them easier to reach, too.
Wood Holder
The classic shape of this wooden utensil holder brings strong, clean lines to your kitchen countertop. It has a beautiful silhouette with small handles that give it a contemporary edge. Fill with wooden utensils for a cottage-core feel.
2. Low quality materials
Materials are crucial in making a kitchen look cheap rather than expensive, and while laminate, butcher-block, and peel-and-stick backsplash tiles are affordable kitchen options, choosing some more elevated materials is a more sustainable (and chic) decision.
'While natural stone or custom cabinetry may not always be in the budget, opt for durable, high-quality finishes like quartz countertops, solid wood cabinets, or tiles with a subtle sheen,' Nina says. 'Even laminate can look elevated when paired with sleek kitchen hardware.'
3. Too many colors or patterns
Don't get us wrong, color and pattern can work wonders in kitchens, and we are big fans of the enduring dopamine decor trend. Being mindful of mixing and matching is advised, though, as a small kitchen can easily become overwhelmed by a variety of designs.
'Stick to a neutral or monochromatic kitchen color scheme with strategic pops of color,' Nina suggests. 'Light shades like whites, creams, or soft grays create an airy feel, while a touch of matte black or brushed brass adds contrast and character.'
Infuse contrast through a black toaster on a white countertop, or a metallic set of pots and pans hung against a cream-painted wall.
4. Oversize hardware or fixtures
Statement faucets and oversized cabinet handles can certainly look elegant in the right space; in small kitchens, however, they can draw too much attention to the hardware. Instead, dainty fixtures can make a small kitchen feel more refined.
'An undermount sink provides a seamless look, while minimalistic kitchen hardware, such as brushed nickel or matte black, adds an elevated finish,' Nina states. 'Avoid overly ornate options to maintain a modern feel.'
5. Poor lighting
No one wants to spend time in a space with harsh overhead lighting, so in a small kitchen, it is especially pertinent to avoid austere illumination. Nina recommends adding kitchen lighting underneath surfaces rather than above them to make the room feel softer and more inviting.
'Layered lighting is essential for a high-end look,' she tells us. 'Under-cabinet LED lighting, a statement pendant over a small island, or recessed lights create warmth and sophistication. Avoid harsh, overly cool-toned bulbs.'
A small kitchen can look luxurious and tidy with the proper attention to detail. Focus on clean, contemporary silhouettes, quality materials, and a stylish color scheme for a space that is just as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing.
