Shea McGee just made the case for ditching white bedding – here's why it's actually the perfect fall-ready refresh
White bedding may be classic, but the designer says these color alternatives make for a 'sophisticated' look
As we edge closer to fall, there's all the more reason to start embracing earthy colors throughout our home decor. That's certainly the ethos of interior design maestro Shea McGee, who is encouraging us to step away from white bedding and delve into the world of color.
In a recent video posted to Instagram, Shea makes a clear and convincing case for re-thinking classic white bedding with something slightly more colorful. Although white bedding is amongst the most timeless of color choices, venturing into the world of color is guaranteed to add depth, warmth, and more interest to your fall bedroom ideas.
If your bedding is in need of a seasonal refresh, read on, where we discuss Shea's expert tips, as well as her top picks for the best bedding that you can shop now.

'If you don’t want to use white bedding, go with something that has some saturation but still feels neutral enough that you can pair a lot of different throw pillows with it,' explains Shea in the video.
This approach is all about venturing away from light neutrals such as white, beige, and light gray which can often lack depth and interest; and instead embracing grounding, earthy colors. Since these colors – think muted blues, greens, and rust oranges – have a natural quality, they're the ideal middle ground between classic neutrals and bolder colors. While bold and bright colors can be tricky to style and lack longevity, these earth tones are easy to incorporate and maintain appeal year-long.
In addition, these earth tones are also perfectly placed for the transition from summer to fall. While seasonal color trends can quickly become overwhelming, muted shades provide a subtle hint of the changing seasons without going overkill.
Interior designer Christine Vroom of Christine Vroom Interiors shares below her favorite fall color schemes, inspired by the natural world, and explains why they work well to create cozy bedrooms:

'Fall decor is most associated with warmer tones of rich browns, spice tones, chestnuts – basically anything that makes you feel cozy. However, my favorite colors for fall are deep rich greens with warm nudes and velvety cognacs. I think green is a nice addition because it brings the outside in. We lose a lot of outside color during this season so it’s a beautiful contrast to see those warmer fall leaves changing outside and still have your beautiful nature hues inside.'
In the video, Shea goes on to recommend McGee & Co.'s Branston bedding collection, which includes a linen duvet cover and linen shams in a muted blue color. When teamed with the Brown Mohair Pillow, Shea adds: 'I love that you’re getting some color with the blue but then you’re getting a nice grounding neutral; paired together, it feels very sophisticated but also really interesting at the same time.'
Looking to channel this look in your own bedroom ideas? Below, we've rounded up the McGee & Co. styles Shea loves (which are on sale now), as well as some of our top picks to create a similar, elevated look in the bedroom this fall.
Loved by Shea, the Branston duvet cover is made from linen and has a subtle stripe detail in a muted navy blue color.
Complete the Branston set with the matching shams. Since the color is so muted, you can pair this set with pretty much any other color depending on your style.
This brown mohair pillow is an on-trend way to add texture and cozy appeal to your fall bedding.
Prefer decorating with green? Opt for this muted olive green duvet cover from Lulu & Georgia which will set the tone for a calming sleep space.
When it comes to creating a fall-inspired bedroom, don't be afraid to experiment with layering different colors, textures, and fabrics. An eclectic approach will enhance a warm and cozy look, and so long as you stick to these rich, earthy hues, you really can't go wrong.
