We know that great bedroom storage is a game-changer when it comes to creating an organized and clutter-free space. But the best storage solutions aren’t just practical features to keep clothes and shoes looking tidy.

With the right materials and finishing touches, bedroom storage can also elevate a room into a chic and elegant style statement. The result: a calm and orderly bedroom that also looks expensive and refined.

Eager to know more? Here, designers and experts reveal how to make bedroom storage look luxurious and expensive whatever your style tempo.

How to make your bedroom storage look more luxurious and expensive

The right bedroom storage has the power to upgrade your sleep space into one of the most stylish areas of the home.

'Bedroom storage is an essential aspect of creating a comfortable and organized space,' says Nick Cryer managing director of design practice Berkeley Place. 'Your dressing area should feel indulgent and look elegant, transforming your bedroom into a true sanctuary. Not just a place to relax and recharge, but also where you prepare for the day ahead, setting your tone and mood.'

So whether you're in the mood for a total bedroom remodel or simply looking for a few storage upgrades, you're definitely in the right place. From bespoke, built-in storage to beautiful hardware, interior designers unveil the best storage tips for leaving a lasting design impression.

1. Choose built-in bedroom storage

Built-in wardrobes, cabinets, and vanity units are often the gold standard when it comes to organizing your bedroom – and for good reason.

Integrated joinery can make the most of a smaller space, which can be crucial in older homes, short on closet space. But designers have a few essential tips to make built-in storage look even more high-end.

'For a more luxurious look, paint the built-ins to match the wall color,' says Kentucky-based designer Bethany Adams. 'Just be sure to use a slightly more durable sheen – like satin – to protect from daily wear and tear.'

Another idea is to use sleek wrap-around panelling for a pared-back luxurious mood as shown in this project by Rae & Heath Architects in San Francisco. ;Fully integrated storage is the key to achieving the calming, retreat-like feel of this minimalist primary suite remodel,' explains Megan Rae Hannon, principal at the studio. 'Warm oak panels wrap around the bedroom so that the bed wall effortlessly transforms into generous custom closets.'

To keep the lines of the room as clean and zen as possible, the furniture is limited to just the bed and carved wood nightstands. 'The luxurious material palette of wood, natural stone, and plaster achieves a true bedroom sanctuary free of clutter, but packed with storage,' adds Megan.

2. Play around with scale

Designers agree that paying attention to scale is key if you want to achieve a premium look for bedroom storage.

Balancing the size and scale of your bedroom with the overall proportions of bedroom storage is a great way to enhance the luxurious feel – if you get it right. Too small, and the storage looks mean; too big, and your room will be engulfed by furniture.

'In a room with high ceilings, for instance, larger wardrobes with striking features and elegant finishes can add grandeur, while still maintaining balance in the space,' explains Tom Howley, creative design director of bespoke design company Tom Howley. 'In small bedrooms refining the details and scaling down the furniture creates a more intimate, yet sophisticated look.'

3. Invest in bespoke bedroom storage

Where space is tight or awkwardly shaped, a bespoke storage solution can maximize every last inch of space, where off-the-shelf products might struggle. And with that comes an elevated look and a polished silhouette.

'To make your bedroom storage look more expensive and luxurious, bespoke fitted wardrobes are a game-changer,' states Tom. 'Tailored to your space, they provide a sleek, built-in aesthetic that instantly elevates the room. Unlike standard freestanding closets, bespoke designs make full use of the available space, eliminating gaps and creating a polished, cohesive look.'

Craig Matson, co-founder of Roundhouse agrees: 'Custom wardrobes not only solve these challenges but also enhance the overall feel of the bedroom, helping to create that much-needed sanctuary of calm – a key feature for any restful space.'

Finish off with extra details like jewelry drawer inserts, tie holders, or bespoke hangers for top-notch functionality and a sense of luxury.

4. Upgrade hardware and handles

Details count when it comes to elevating your bedroom storage, and that means carefully considering your choice of handles and knobs. This is a great tip whether you are embarking on an entire storage rethink or simply want to upgrade your existing bedroom storage with a DIY tweak.

'Swapping out hardware with nicer quality looking knobs and pulls is a simple addition that can make a piece feel more expensive,' says Mary Jo Major of Washington design firm, Rise Interiors.

'Beautiful hardware can completely transform storage,' agrees Katerina Tchevytchalova, director at K'Arte Design. 'Metal finishes, such as bronze, give an expensive feel and won't necessarily break the bank.'

5. Pay attention to texture and tone

Picking out the right materials for bedroom storage is a design priority. Whether you prefer natural wood or a glossy lacquer, your storage needs to look good and function practically on a daily basis. But to enhance the luxe appeal, don't forget about the texture and tone of the material.

'A textural inlay within the front of the door is a lovely way to layer and a wonderful opportunity to add depth of interest and personality,' puts in Tommy Kebbson, interior design expert of Kebbson & Co. 'Opt for a light, neutral tone on wood work or better yet, choose a light wood stain for increased depth. This takes a step beyond the standard sprayed finish.'

Keep molding styles simple and clean for a timeless mood, he adds, and go for a low-maintenance finish so surfaces won't mark and wood profiles won't collect dust."

'We used a specialist veneer inlay for these sliding wardrobes which plays with light wonderfully creating an almost 3D tiger stripe effect,' explains Tommy. 'Then the brass metal inlays break the door down into sections.'

6. Go luxe with bedside tables

Bedside tables are an essential piece of storage kit. But how to make them look more luxurious and expensive?

'Beside tables can be very chic, but sometimes a larger nightstand is called for when storage is a priority - especially in a primary bedroom,' says San Francisco-based interior designer Marea Clark. 'One good option is to choose pieces with hidden drawers (and no hardware), that look more sculptural and streamlined but function well with deep drawers.'

'Look for pieces that balance beauty with practicality,' adds Nick Cryer. 'Tallboys with multiple drawers are a smart choice, as they keep your space tidy and personal items neatly tucked away.'

And if replacing furniture isn't feasible, consider versatile storage options like stackable trunks which can help store items that aren't in daily use.

7. Illuminate bedroom storage with built-in lights

If you're starting bedroom storage from scratch, integral lighting creates a chic, expensive look that's practical too.

'Incorporating integral lighting also adds a high-end touch, with soft, ambient lighting inside wardrobes offering both practicality and a luxury feel,' says Tom Howley. Adding built-in LEDs to open shelves instantly provides a luxurious feel and allows you to play with the overall ambiance.

8. Design a walk in closet for the ultimate bedroom storage

Creating a bespoke dressing room or walk-in closet is the ultimate choice for luxurious bedroom storage. Whether you are planning to convert a spare room or transform a corner of your bedroom, there are some extra design rules to luxe up a dressing room.

'To add a luxurious touch, consider incorporating marble or stone finishes for shelves and countertops,' says Tchevytchalova of K'Arte Design. 'Or velvet-lined drawers, which are particularly useful for storing jewelry and sunglasses. Be sure to leave room for a full-height mirror to complete the space and consider integrating speakers, so you can listen to music or news while dressing.'

Bedroom storage is a practical addition, but it also has to be aesthetic too, it's a big part of the room's design. You want your storage to work hard, but look expensive and beautiful too, so these designer-approved tips are all worth considering while you are deciding on the best setup for your space.
