Decorating with antique and vintage pieces is one of the simplest ways to bring character into a home. At their worst, an excess of older furnishings can make a space feel museum-like, cold, and dated. At their best, a combination of antiques with more modern pieces gives a home an eclectic, cozy, and interesting feel. Zooey Deschanel's living room embodies the latter.

Deschanel and her husband, Property Brother Johnathan Scott, have a classic – but interesting – living room idea. The couple's space starts with a velvet sofa in a modern moss color. It's the perfect complement to the rest of their dark wood space. Behind Zooey on the couch, a wooden sideboard is home to an orchid in a white pot and a vintage phonograph. On the wall, an oil painting in an antique frame gives the whole room an old-world luxe energy.

According to experts, the mix-and-match style of their space is right in line with interior design trends. Megan Slack, Head of Celebrity Style, states: 'For 2025, minimalism is out, and characterful interiors are in. People are increasingly interested in spaces guided by their personal interests, and Deschanel's take on the look is especially elevated because it also integrates vintage. It takes her interest in music and mixes it with the heirloom trend.'

What makes Deschanel and Scott's design impactful beyond trends is how it seamlessly blends decorating with vintage and contemporary pieces. For instance, the antique oil painting above the sofa in a trending shade keeps the painting from feeling too old-school, which keeping the sofa grounded in classic design. Together, each furniture piece makes the others feel more interesting. The same is true of the potted orchid, which is a small accessory that makes a big impact on the energy in the space.

The best interiors have a strong point of view, and Zooey Deschanel's living room is a great example of this. Integrating a collection of antiques with more modern pieces lets one easily take a point of view that is uniquely theirs.
