Swimming pools frequently lack character and resemble empty concrete shells when they are not framed by thoughtful decor, such as patio furniture or greenery. As we move through the bright spring and early summer of 2026, the trend is shifting toward a deep appreciation for the architectural 'bones' of a space, specifically the sharp lines and geometric clarity that define high-end outdoor living.

We are taking inspiration from Steve Martin's '80s home for a classic solution. His Los Angeles property featured a Bauhaus-style pool, minimal and clean, with a white façade. The architecture is something to note. It's a structural extension of the home itself, defined by crisp right angles and a monochromatic palette that makes the water’s blue hue feel even more vibrant.

The greenery and natural pots act as complementary accents, while the surrounding palm trees lend a tropical atmosphere perfect for a mid-July dip.

Designers agree that introducing plants and flowers to a pool area is one of the most effective ways to make it feel relaxing and visually stunning. According to experts, experimenting with greenery of different sizes is a brilliant way to add dimension to a flat backyard.

'Surrounding the pool with an abundance of lush vegetation, such as palms of various heights, adds a refreshing and natural ambiance, turning the space into a vibrant oasis,' explains Luisina Marchiori, interior designer at Homerun Brokers.

While Steve's pool utilized a uniform row of identical pots, you might consider incorporating a variety of seasonal flowers and trees to brighten your outdoor space.

During the peak of the 2026 summer season, you could go the extra mile by introducing vibrant colors, such as pink or yellow blooms. You can also experiment with color and texture via the containers; terracotta and stone are both excellent options to make a pool look more interesting without distracting from the architectural integrity of the build.
