Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. is never one to do anything by half measures. His home, designed by Fox-Nahem Associates, features the most unexpected anti-trend to date: retro futurism – a more luxurious, liveable version of futurism that goes beyond standard popular trends.

In Robert Downey Jr.'s kitchen corner, curving shapes fuse with textural raw materials and metallic accents for a reinterpretation of a retro vision for the future, straight out of a classic Eighties sci-fi movie, but without the cold, clinical starkness often associated with uber-futuristic or modern decor ideas.

So what exactly is retro futurism? This interior design trend is a modern form of design that often features metallics, shapely lines, and a monochromatic look that suggests dynamism, motion, and fluidity.

Futuristic design often integrates innovative materials, technology, and architectural elements, it's all about achieving a sleek and streamlined look. However, the latest take on this aesthetic – retro futurism – also blends warmth, softness, and unexpected color additions.

While modernist futuristic design was popular in the early 2000s, these days, we're noticing a combination of modernity paired with nostalgia. A trend many designers and decorators are starting to embrace. Success depends on using the right materials and opting for a sleek design that results in an effective blend of old and new.

Less is more, so be careful not to over-design, especially in the kitchen, the heart of the home. Bear in mind too that very modern kitchen ideas can sometimes feel lifeless and industrial, so balance this by introducing warmth with plenty of layered lighting and textured furnishings to add interest.

Color is another consideration. Despite its modern bones, this home includes plenty of warmer touches. In Robert's space, the vibrant pink takes pride of place. Rich and nuanced, a vibrant pink has a depth that lends playful sophistication to a scheme.

'I love to use soft, deep colors and materials in rooms, says interior designer Rachel Chudley. 'It is great to play around with these elements and introduce a couple of rogue details to surprise.'

Finally, the retro futuristic look isn't complete without a few metallic accents. The simplest way to introduce metal is with your lighting. The sculptural pendants are a standout addition. Follow through with a metal backsplash, accessories, and countertop for a truly unique kitchen that champions retro futurism.
