Bookshelf organization is a fine art. With several different methods to choose from, considering how to organize your own bookshelf can be daunting; however, we are inclined to go for a color-coordinated one as a foolproof approach to styling.

Reese Witherspoon agrees, as evidenced in a recent Instagram post. In the image, we can see her study features a white bookcase in which brown and green books are grouped together while beautifully framed by photographs and ceramics.

While color-coordinating books may seem straightforward as a bookshelf-organizing method, we have some expert-approved tips and tricks to make this timeless trend even more chic.

According to designers, arranging books by color is so consistently popular for a reason: it is visually pleasing and simply makes any shelf look tidier.

'Color coordination instantly elevates a bookshelf’s visual impact,' says designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'Instead of chaotic stacks or mismatched titles, the carefully curated palette creates order and harmony, acting as a focal point in the room. It also reflects a sense of intentionality, making the bookshelf not just a place for books but a curated expression of style. Whether you want a vibrant rainbow effect or a soothing monochromatic look, color coordination injects personality and turns your decor into an artistic statement.'

She continues, 'The popularity of color-coordinated bookshelves lies in their ability to blend function with form. Social media has fueled this trend, with countless influencers showcasing their beautifully arranged shelves as backdrops for content creation. Beyond aesthetics, it offers a sense of calm and organization, turning even the busiest bookshelves into visually pleasing displays. In a world that craves order and beauty, this trend checks all the boxes.'

If you're looking to color-coordinate your own book shelf, zone in on the exact palette you want to display.

'Begin by grouping your books into color categories,' Lichtenstein suggests. 'Decide whether you want a full-spectrum rainbow, an ombré effect, or a neutral theme using shades like whites, blacks, and beiges. If your bookshelf is painted or wallpapered, select a color scheme that complements or contrasts with the background to make the arrangement pop.'

'For a polished look, arrange books within each color group by tone—from darkest to lightest or vice versa. This adds depth and creates a subtle visual flow,' she says. 'To avoid monotony, intersperse your books with decor items like vases, sculptures, or framed art that match or contrast the colors for added texture and interest.'

Above all, embrace imperfections in a color-coordinated bookcase. Mismatched spines can easily be rectified when one is turned inward so the pages face out, giving a bookshelf a unique look.
