Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's relaxing sofa color is on trend for 2025 and beyond – experts laud the power of this enduring neutral shade
The actress and musician's sun room stuns in a shade that will never date. Interior designers explain why the color remains endlessly popular
Gray is a color that seems to never completely fade. Though warmer neutrals have risen in popularity over the past few years, gray has not disappeared, and for good reason. The shade is one of the most versatile and calming colors around.
It would appear that Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman have also picked up on the benefits of gray. A recent Instagram post from Urban shows that the color features heavily in their sunroom. From the charcoal indoor-outdoor table to the light pebble velvet Sofa to the cool white walls, the space is a vision in gray.
'This space is a masterclass in decorating with gray,' says Jennifer Ebert, interior design expert and digital editor at Homes & Gardens, 'I love the choice of different shades of gray furniture to create contrast and visual interest. Further, the mass of green that comes through the window makes gray the perfect color for an indoor-outdoor room because it is such a natural combination.'

She continues, 'Gray is one of the most enduring neutrals, and Urban and Kidman's space is such a powerful demonstration of why: it is endlessly versatile and calming.'
The first lesson from the space is that Gray defies interior design trends because of its timeless versatility. The color has cool undertones, meaning that it can easily match with blue, or green, or be paired with white for a cool contrast. The shade makes a gorgeous paint color, but can also be effectively used as upholstery, depending on the effect one wants to create. It can fit into almost any design style, from traditional to modern, minimalist to maximalist.
Furthermore, people will always be drawn to gray because of its calming nature. Ebert states, 'Gray is such a wonderful neutral because it mimics the colors that appear in the natural world. It is reminiscent of stones, the water, and the sky, creating an instantly calming energy. It's the perfect color to make a living room more relaxing.'
H&G's Gray Furniture Edit
Incorporating gray as a part of soft furnishings is a wonderful way to offset some of the perceived coldness associated with the color. A gray sofa or bench is the perfect place to start.
