Meghan Markle's kitchen in her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, has become one of the most viewed culinary spaces in recent weeks. While the house is actually not where Meghan resides, and was just used for filming purposes, we nonetheless have become quite familiar with the modern California style.

Specifically, the black and white scheme offers great kitchen color ideas, it is a true classic. The kitchen features crisp, white cabinetry, a cream, tiled backsplash, and small, black knobs, adding contrast to the space. While Meghan could have easily gone for a completely monochromatic, white kitchen, the black knobs add visual interest and an air of sophistication to the space, using a design strategy that experts say will never go out of style.

One of the key appeals of a black and white kitchen is their versatility. Transcending trends, these colors are suitable for both modern and traditional spaces. 'Few design choices exude the same level of sophistication, drama, and timelessness as a black-and-white kitchen,' explains designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'Rooted in classic contrast yet adaptable to contemporary trends, a monochrome palette offers endless possibilities, whether you prefer high-gloss modernity, rustic charm, or a sleek minimalist aesthetic.'

She continues, 'The allure of a monochrome kitchen lies in its simplicity and versatility. Black and white is a high-contrast pairing that never feels dated; it’s as at home in a historic brownstone as it is in a cutting-edge modern loft. The balance of light and dark creates visual interest without relying on excessive ornamentation, ensuring longevity in design.'

When it comes to styling a black and white kitchen, Nina recommends incorporating textured accessories to maintain visual interest. She states: 'To avoid a flat, overly stark aesthetic, introduce texture through materials like matte black cabinetry, glossy white tiles, natural stone, or brushed metal finishes,' she says. 'A mix of surfaces, such as honed marble countertops paired with sleek black cabinetry, adds character and warmth.'

Additionally, introducing natural materials can also help soften the space; we can see Meghan's kitchen features wood countertops, giving it a more rustic feel. 'Wood accents, woven textiles, and greenery help soften the sharp contrast of black and white,' Nina explains. 'Open shelving with wooden cutting boards, ceramic pieces, or linen textiles introduces organic warmth without disrupting the palette.'

Finally, consider adding black and white accents into the kitchen via lighting fixtures. 'Strategic lighting enhances the monochrome effect,' Nina states. 'Consider bold pendant lights with black metal finishes or soft, diffused lighting under cabinetry to create depth and ambiance. If your kitchen leans dark, ensure natural light plays a central role in keeping the space from feeling closed off.'

Whether you opt for stark contrast with black and white tiles, or simple accents, like black knobs on white cabinets, this timeless color scheme is an excellent pick for the kitchen.
