Celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard says this is the 'most important' lesson in home design
The designer to Cher, Ellen Pompeo, and the Kardashians may be associated with star style, but his teaching translates to our own spaces
Martyn Lawrence Bullard might just have the most enviable client list in the industry. The British-born designer has spent years working alongside the likes of Cher, Tommy Hilfiger, Eva Mendes, and Kylie Jenner (to name but a few) – and his new book, fittingly named Star Style, brings these achievements to the forefront of our agenda.
'I wanted Star Style to serve as a nod to what has given me the most attention, and that has been all the celebrities I've worked with,' Martyn says in an exclusive interview with H&G. 'I've been fortunate that celebrities have loved my work – they’ve been nothing but encouraging and allowed me to publish these spaces.'
With Martyn's exclusive clients comes the opportunity to design some of the world's best homes (From Los Angeles to Connecticut and further afield), but the basis of his teaching ideology translates to homes of all sizes.
'The most important thing about your home is that it really is that it’s a mirror of your personality, and it’s an expression of who you are,' Martyn says.
'There's nothing more personal in life than bringing somebody into your home and allowing them to see the way you live and what you surround yourself with. So, it’s important to be inspired by other people, but it’s also important to remember that each one of us is an individual, and we have individual tastes.'
As Martyn explains, the purpose of Star Style (alongside the opportunity to look inside some celebrity houses) is to inspire us to incorporate our personalities in new and inventive ways. This might not be in the exact way that certain celebrities have exhibited themselves in their spaces, but it's a reminder that we, too, can celebrate ourselves through inventive design quirks.
'Just because Kylie Jenner's got dining chairs that the leathers dyed to match her lipstick colors doesn't mean that you have to match your lipstick color in your living room. Maybe it's more about if you have blue eyes and you feel good wearing blue; maybe that color blue should be the color you use for your own decoration. Because if you look good wearing it, think how good you're going to look surrounded by it.'

Martyn is a world-class talent and the largest award-winning designer and author based in Los Angeles. He is known for his trademark glamour and flair for the exotic as he curates sophisticated and inviting interiors for Hollywood A-listers and global glitterati, including Kendall Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Tommy Hilfiger, Cher, Ellen Pompeo, and Eva Mendes, to name a few.
As Martin explains, Star Style is a celebration of the beautiful homes that allowed him to become one of the most prominent designers in the industry. However, it also invites us to think about how we can make our own homes our havens, too.
'I wanted it to be a celebration of them, of their style, hence the name, Star Style, and I wanted to give readers an opportunity to see and understand how we got to those interiors – what makes them so individual,' he says.
'It allows us to see the essence of each celebrity client within their homes and what makes it theirs. What makes these homes their sanctuaries?'
'I want people to see the elements of different celebrity personalities throughout, but I hope it encourages them to bring out their own personality and not be scared of that. Sometimes, people are scared of being too adventurous. This is your sign to design with passion and bring out your star style.'
