Martha Stewart may be synonymous with the modern American home, but much of her design inspiration has roots in a former century – starting with bedding.

‘I take special care of my bedrooms to see that each one is really comfortable – that the bedding is good quality, and the beds are made up beautifully,' Stewart once shared on The Martha Stewart Show. Her secret to a beautiful bed? Vintage-inspired bedding that resembles the pieces her mother kept in her linen closet. Decades later, the pieces have shaped the Martha Stewart Collection, now available at Amazon and Walmart.

'When we are coming up with ideas for our line of bedding at Macy’s, one of my inspirations came from my mother's vintage linens, which date back many years. Mom gave me the task of organizing her linen closet one day when I was a young child, and I discovered... beautifully embroidered hand towels, pillow slips with satin stitch needlework, and colorful crochet hems. They were all part of my grandmother’s dowry. My mother’s mother's dowry,' Stewart recalls.

'They are the core of what has become my own very large collection of table linens and bedding linens. I take pride in keeping them all beautifully laundered and I used them on the beds.'

What is the best bedding for good sleep?

The best bed sheets often depend on our own personal needs (for example, the bedroom's climate and the position in which we sleep). As a general rule, experts say we should look for a higher thread count for a more expensive, luxurious, silky feel. However, high thread count sheets are not the best for those who sleep hot because they trap heat more easily. Therefore, while it is common practice to opt for bedding with a high thread count, it may not be best if you live in a hot environment.
