Gathering with loved ones is what turns a house into a home, and good interior design facilitates these connections. Seating, therefore, is a huge part of elevating your home. Good seating layouts can encourage conversation and make it more likely that you will spend time in communal areas with friends and family. Kelly Clarkson's living room is the perfect example of how to do it right.

The singer's living room seating idea incorporates an age-old technique that allows five or more people to easily converse: a sofa facing two armchairs across a coffee table. Her space features a cream boucle sofa and two green chenille barrel armchairs perched opposite one another. On the right side of the sofa, a striped pouf acts as a side table that can dually function as another seat if more guests are over.

The majority of the furniture in the living room is from Clarkson's latest Kelly Clarkson Home collection at Wayfair, inspired by her recent move to New York City. This elevated collaboration features perfect for balancing the warmth of home with the chicness of the city. The pieces feature clean lines, sumptuous textures, and a mix of metals for an inviting and subtly luxurious effect.

Despite the city-inspired provenance of the collection, the living room layout feels like an escape from the city rather than a continuation of it. Clarkson tells Homes & Gardens, exclusively: 'I’m very into nature, and you’ll notice that with the things I’ve curated for the line. New York can feel like a concrete jungle, so I like to bring life into my home.'

An abundance of texture is principal to this feeling of warmth in the cozy living room that makes you want to sit down and have a conversation. In addition to the boucle of the sofa and the chenille of the barrel chairs, Clarkson has integrated an abundance of decorative cushions. A white shearling throw draped casually across the back of one of the chairs brings an inviting energy into the space. These pieces not only bring visual interest but make it more comfortable to spend time in the living room.

Finally, though seating is essential, a chic coffee table is also central to creating a similar scheme to Clarkson's. As shown in the photograph, the table allows visitors to sip drinks or eat snacks without having to hold them in their laps. In addition to the conversational element, this also helps to keep your living room cleaner over time.

Though the method sounds simple, far too many living rooms are centered on a television, with viewing, rather than conversing as their central aim. To overcome this living room layout mistake while still including a television in the room, you can try positioning the television in front of the large sofa with lots of decorative cushions. When it comes time for a family watch party, it's easy for everyone to squeeze onto the sofa, and throw cushions become easy floor seating for children.

No matter the layout of your living room, the goal should be, well, living. By carefully considering your needs and the needs of your family, you can plan a layout that facilitates your requirements. Kelly Clarkson's living room is a great jumping off point.
