Kate Hudson's stunning patio embodies the 'outdoor living room' trend that will dominate for summer 2024
The actress's back patio captures the cozy warmth of the indoors, outside – experts explain why this look is growing in popularity
Memorial Day is the unofficial kick-off to summer and, even better, patio season. It's the time of year for outdoor meals, outdoor drinks, and family time spent in the fresh air. After the long winter months, most of our patios need a bit of a zhuzh. Fortunately, the exterior of Kate Hudson's home provides the blueprint for perfect outdoor decorating this summer.
The Almost Famous actress's patio idea was unveiled in the background of a recent Instagram post, and we're still returning to admire the post. The space features oversized farmhouse lighting hanging over a massive natural wood dining table, surrounded by stylish wooden benches with blue upholstery. In the corner, a cozy, pillow-covered sofa creates the perfect spot to curl up with a book. Potted trees and roses remind us that it's an outdoor space. The whole look matches perfectly with the all-white, linear design of Hudson's home.
Everything about the design of Hudson's space is perfect for spending time outdoors the same way we might spend time in the living room or dining room during the winter. Experts call this style an outdoor living room. It celebrates al fresco living with the comforts of the indoors.

Hudson's outdoor furniture choices help to bolster this sense of warmth and 'bringing the indoors out'. Jennifer Ebert, Digital Editor at Homes & Gardens states: 'I love the modern farmhouse dining table and benches that Kate Hudson uses on her porch. The natural wood nods to the outdoor surroundings, bringing in a sense of warmth and classic design. At the same time, it matches perfectly with the two large pendant lights creating a cohesive, stylized look. It's perfect for dinners, drinks, or just conversation on the porch.'
Hudson's choice of outdoor seating bolsters this warm, comfortable feel that is perfect for outdoor entertaining. Lena Gierasinska, furniture expert at Barker and Stonehouse adds: 'Corner sofa sets are a great way to create a sociable set up in the garden. Combine outdoor rugs, textured throws and scatter cushions to create a snug, homey feel.'
Furthermore, the look revealed on Kate Hudson's Instagram is fast becoming an outdoor decorating trend for 2024. Gierasinska states: 'Gardens and outdoor spaces have fast become an extension of our living areas so it’s important to consider ways in which you can style these spaces to be both beautiful and practical.'
Considering patios as an extension of the outdoors, Ebert says, 'I love when the decor on the patio is in conversation with the interior of the home. It creates such a beautiful, cohesive scheme that feels put together from beginnning to end.'
