A backyard garden can be a lush oasis, a place to escape. For some, it can also act as a privacy shield; robust and leafy greens can obstruct an outsider's view, ensuring that an outdoor space feels separated from neighbors.

As one of the most famous actresses of our time, Jennifer Aniston is a proponent of the privacy strategy. The Friends star's Bel Air home was designed by Stephen Shadley, who shared an image of her tranquil backyard to his Instagram page. Even for those of us who do not have the celebrity status of Aniston, privacy is a considerable factor when landscaping, and we love how Aniston and Shadley incorporated a mix of textured and voluminous plants in her space.

With this serving as inspiration, we spoke to an expert about some of the best plants for privacy. When considering which plants to put in your backyard, it is important to be mindful of whether they have branches, as well as general density. Designer Nina Lichtenstein explains, 'For those who want privacy throughout the year, evergreens are ideal. Thuja Green Giant and Leyland Cypress are two popular options; they grow quickly and develop into dense, towering screens. For a unique pop of color and added privacy, Blue Spruce trees are a stunning choice, bringing a cool-toned blue-green hue to the landscape. Their dense branches provide excellent coverage, making them a great option for larger backyards. Smaller evergreen shrubs like boxwood and privet are also excellent for lower privacy hedges and adapt well to various climates.'

For those looking for Japanese garden ideas, a style that Aniston adheres to, Lichtenstein recommends bamboo. 'Known for its rapid growth and tall, narrow shape, bamboo creates a contemporary, Zen-inspired look while providing effective privacy,' she says. 'Clumping bamboo, rather than running bamboo, is best for backyards, as it’s easier to contain and doesn’t spread invasively.'

Additionally, factors such as backyard size and regional climate could determine the best plants for your space. 'For smaller backyards or vertical privacy, climbing plants like ivy, clematis, or wisteria can transform a fence or trellis into a green wall,' Lichtenstein explains. 'For a more fragrant option, consider star jasmine or honeysuckle, which add both privacy and fragrance.'

She continues, 'If you’re in a temperate climate, consider trees like magnolia, holly, or bay laurel. These broadleaf evergreens are ideal for creating a dense, year-round privacy wall, and they add lushness and visual interest to any landscape.'

Below, find a selection of privacy-friendly plants and accessories that are suitable for yards of various sizes.

Maintenance is a huge part of ensuring that private backyards and gardens stay this way, so ensure that you have the proper tools to keep trees and plants trimmed and tidy.
