As free-spirited in Jessa in the HBO series, Girls, Jemima Kirke portrayed a bohemian-styled character. When it comes to the actor's actual home, eclecticism is favored thanks to a wavy, gold mirror, a wine-colored sofa, and most notably, patterned, gray tiles.

The latter makes a statement, as evidenced in a recent clip posted to Instagram by the actor, who has also starred in Sex Education and Conversations with Friends.

In the video, we can see how the wavy tiles complement the white-painted ceiling beams and metallic mirror, providing a pseudo-brick effect to the space that evokes more of a cool marble tone than a rustic ambiance. It's a tile trend we can get behind.

Much like showstopping wallpaper or hanging works of art, patterned tiles on the wall are an instant draw, with textural features boosting their visual interest.

'Patterned tiles add an immediate wow factor to any room,' says designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'They have the ability to breathe life into an otherwise neutral space, creating depth and energy through intricate designs, vibrant colors, or subtle geometric forms. Whether inspired by Moroccan, Mediterranean, or modern motifs, patterned tiles elevate a wall from functional to fabulous. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, they also serve as a durable, easy-to-clean surface that’s ideal for high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms.'

Since patterned tiles are such a statement in their own right, patterned tiles must be carefully styled around.

'Since patterned tiles are already busy, grounding the room with neutral furniture helps create harmony,' Lichtenstein states. 'Opt for solid-colored furniture in muted tones such as whites, creams, or greys, letting the tiles take center stage.'

Alternatively, contrasting elements, such as the deep red sofa in Kirke's living area, can act as nice juxtaposing pieces against patterned tiles.

'Pairing minimalist, sleek furniture with vibrant patterned tiles can add a sophisticated contrast,' she explains. 'If the tiles are vintage or traditional, consider contemporary pieces to strike a modern-traditional balance.'

Kirke's space fuses color with pattern for a dopamine decor-esque appearance; however, it is noteworthy that she has opted for solid colors in the rest of the room rather than several other patterns, which could clash.

Finally, consider bringing in some nature to a space with patterned tiles, as it helps calm a room.

'Incorporate other natural elements like wood or stone to soften the boldness of patterned tiles,' Lichtenstein says. 'A wooden dining table, wicker baskets, or woven textiles can introduce warmth and texture that complements rather than competes.'

According to Lichtenstein, the eye will naturally be drawn to wall tiles regardless of pattern.

'The tactile quality of tiles also adds depth, making walls feel more three-dimensional.,' she says. 'Whether your aim is to evoke a bohemian, eclectic vibe or a chic, modern atmosphere, patterned tiles provide the versatility to achieve it.'

With the proper balance of modern and neutral pieces, patterned tiles can look right at home in any space. We recommend opting for a neutral color and soothing pattern for the right amount of visual stimulation.
