The concepts of 'rug' and 'outdoors' don't seem like they would go together, but the dynamic combination can transform any patio. With a variety of luxurious and stylish outdoor rugs on the market, it's no surprise that interior designers and celebrities alike are catching on to include these unexpected furnishings in their outdoor spaces. Idina Menzel demonstrates the bold impact rugs can have on her beautiful patio.

The Wicked star shared a video on the patio to announce the launch of her Encore by Idina Collection with QVC, but all we could focus on was her background. Menzel's outdoor space is gray and blue, grounded by a chevron blue, gray, and chocolate rug. On top, concrete tables, a sofa, and an armchair reflect the tones seen in the carpet. Her coffee table is accessorized with candles and plants for a cozy, lived-in feel.

Beyond simple beauty, Menzel's choice to use an outdoor rug is indicative of a larger cultural turn towards making our outdoor spaces cozy. One of the simplest ways to do this, as exemplified by this patio, is by creating an 'outdoor living room.' 'The outdoor living room has become a must-have for homeowners as we look to create outdoor spaces that are a true extension of our homes,' says Reilly Gray, design expert at luxury outdoor furniture brand Suns Lifestyle. 'Allowing you to make the most of your garden whilst maintaining all the comforts of your favorite chair (or spot on the sofa), they offer the perfect retreat whether you're relaxing with a book or entertaining loved ones. Regardless if you have a sizeable garden, compact courtyard or a balcony, you can easily transform your outdoor space into a lounge.'

Luckily, the process for designing an outdoor living room is not dissimilar from designing the interiors of your home. Gray states: 'Just like inside your home, consider who will use the space, how it'll be used and how often as this will help to determine how much seating you'll need and how flexible the seating options will need to be. Be sure to take accurate measurements so you know how much space is available, after all, you want to make sure your furniture fits comfortable and doesn't look to big or small in the space. Once you've got the practicalities covered, it's then about choosing high-quality pieces that suit your needs and the look you're going for.'

She continues, 'From a style perspective, you also need to decide whether you want your outdoor living space to stand out from your home or complement it. For instance, if you live in a really modern decorated home, then opting for furniture with clean, minimalist lines might be a better option, whilst a traditional home may suit pieces that are shapelier and have a vintage or antique feel. We're seeing customers move away from the grey upholstery fabrics that have been popular for so long, and instead opting for warmer neutrals, soft greens and terracotta shades. These help to bring a warmer, relaxed and more inviting feel that can be brought to life with textiles and accessories.'

An outdoor rug is the must have accessory for updating your patio space regardless of season. Here are six of our top picks.

It's the textured furnishings that bring an outdoor space to life. Gray concludes, 'Remember not to forget about the finishing touches. Layer outdoor cushions in tactile textures and a muted colour palette of blues, whites and neutrals to create a relaxed atmosphere and bring in a rug and outdoor pouffes to help create an Ibiza-inspired feel.'

Next time you're decorating the patio, don't overlook the imporance of rugs.
