Following interior design trends to a tee can be fun, but it isn't the best way to ensure longevity in your spaces. Instead, the most timeless spaces come together in an artful combination of classic design with a few trending pieces mixed in. Goldie Hawn's living room perfectly embodies this balance with her use of a shag rug.

The actress shared her living room idea in an Instagram video, where she perches on a yellow armchair, revealing the room's traditional design. Her space includes hardwood floors, and white walls. Behind her, a beautiful fireplace featuring bold black marble with white carefully designed inlay is a striking focal point in the room. Modern accessories like pothos plants on either side of the television ground the space in 2024. A long stranded, white shag rug brings it all together.

Hawn's look is a huge carpet trend for 2024. Ruggable listed 'Shaggy Rugs' as one of their top home trends of the year. Cassandra Leisz, senior creative director at Ruggable states: 'The popularity of textured shaggy rugs also feeds into the wider “Minimaluxe” trend, which champions tactile materials that elevate your home, making it feel both calming and cozy. Rather than focusing on color or pattern, this look is all about layering your space with contrasting materials'

This 'minimaluxe' interior design trend is a stylish, and warming take on the quiet luxury trend. Goldie Hawn's living room encapsulates the look in its combination of textures. Georgia Metcalfe, creative director at The French Bedroom states: 'The key to this look is in the combination of statement and simplicity, by maintaining a limited and considered colour palette that makes use of complementary colours. Think about the materials you choose too: wooden furnishings are perfect as they wear beautifully and the patina that comes with age only enhances the comforting sense of home that is at the core of the minimaluxe trend.'

Furthermore, a shag rug is the perfect design choice to combine with a traditional living room. Though Hawn's space is gorgeous on it's own, the marble, hardwood and panelling might look a little cold by themselves. The rug adds a sumptuous layer of texture that invites viewers in to take a seat. Its white color coordinates with the white walls, filling the room with brightness and modernity. The visual interest of the combination makes the room much more dynamic and original.

Just because a shag rug looks so fabulous in Goldie Hawn's living room doesn't mean their use should be limited to this space. These rugs are a versatile choice that can be used throughout the home. Leisz states: 'For a bedroom rug idea, we love something cushioned that is comfortable to step on with bare feet. Nothing says cozy like a soft, fluffy bedroom rug that feels good underfoot and makes it easier to get up in the morning!'

For a more modern decorating idea, try using a shag rug as a layer of texture in a monochromatic, contemporary space. The wild yarns will add depth and interest to your home, without changing the color palette. A white rug can also be used with a black sofa and furniture for a striking, modern contrast.

Goldie Hawn's living room is a masterclass in combining an ageless trend with a traditional scheme. The magic happens in the coming together.
