Brooke Shields' 'outdated' living room color was a staple in the '80s – but her polished and textured spin on the shade proves it will never go out of style
Brooke Shields' living room features a gray sofa and a gray, painted bookshelf, which design experts say gives the space a calm, chic feel

In the past, associations with the color gray in interiors have been unfavorable. A staple in the '80s, it can often be lumped into the category of outdated trends. However, with the right styling, gray can be extremely chic and modern, as proven by Brooke Shields' living room.
The actor recently shared a clip inside her living area, which features a smooth, gray sofa, a gray-painted bookshelves, and a variety of books and objects on display. The monochrome color scheme is a stylish approach to using gray in the living room, wherein the color is accented by accessories and textures. We are convinced that this color is due for a big comeback, and designers agree that with the right styling methods, gray can be as sophisticated as ever.
Decorating with gray is popular for a reason; it's a highly versatile neutral, perfect for styles such as quiet luxury and Japandi. Designers explain that there are also lots of shades within the gray universe that should be explored based on the design scheme. 'Gray isn’t a one-note color,' says designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'From pale dove gray to dark charcoal, mixing various shades can add depth to your space. Consider lighter gray cushions on darker gray furniture frames, or vice versa, to create a visually engaging monochromatic look.'

This sofa is polished yet comfortable with crisp tailoring, and of course, it comes in a Brooke Shields-approved hue.
Soft, warm and stylish underfoot, a plush, well-made rug is always worth the investment. If you are uncertain if you want to introduce gray into your space, start with a rug. It will do wonders for the overall look and feel.
The simplest way to add a hint of gray to a living room is with a set of vases. This simple yet stylish design is ideal for both modern and traditional interiors – just add a few sprigs of baby's breath or eucalyptus.
Additionally, mixing gray accessories and furnishings with natural materials brings some life and rusticity to even the most modern of spaces. 'Pair gray furniture with wooden accents to bring a touch of warmth and natural beauty,' Nina suggests. 'A weathered gray sofa placed alongside a rustic wooden coffee table or side tables made from driftwood or teak adds an earthy element to your decor. The combination of gray and wood speaks to a harmonious blend of contemporary and organic design.'
Finally, consider adding metallics to a gray space for even more visual interest. 'Gray furniture with metallic accents, like aluminum, stainless steel, or iron, can give your space a modern, industrial edge,' Nina explains. 'Metallic touches reflect light and add a subtle shine, creating a sense of luxury without detracting from the calmness gray provides.'
With layering of textures, accompaniment of natural elements, and some mixing of gray shades, this formerly dated color can feel brand new in a living space.
